The Wrought Iron product line is highly sought after due to its strength and formability. Park Cities Fence and Gate also makes use of aluminum, steel, corten steel, and other rare metals. Wrought iron fences offer superior security and durability.

Key Differences between Iron and Wood

Wrought Iron: This metal is famous for its high tensile strength, making it impossible to break and very hard to cut. It does not decay, warp, or get infested by insects.

  • Maintenance: Wrought iron does not require much maintenance except for occasional cleaning. Wood fencing will need more care, including painting, treating, and fixing warped planks.
  • Privacy vs. Visibility: Wooden fences offer complete privacy because they obscure the view. Wrought iron fencing usually offers an unobstructed view since it is open and ornate.
  • Cost: The cost of wrought iron fencing is usually higher than that of wood fencing.

When to Choose Which

  • Choose Wrought Iron if: Security and longevity are top priorities, or if you prefer a low-maintenance, high-strength, and classic aesthetic.

Security

Due to its incredible strength in tension, it is much harder to cut, bend, or snap than wood or vinyl. Decorations like pointed tops or spear tops provide a clear warning for climbers.

Durability & Longevity

Iron fences that are well maintained can last for 50 years to over 100 years. Unlike other materials, iron does not warp, rot, or attract pests. The tight vertical boards provide ultimate privacy and security, sometimes with a dog ear cut or a straight top.

Aesthetic Appeal

Iron fences generally increase the value of a property by providing a sophisticated, custom appearance that is appropriate for both historic and modern homes.

High Visibility

The open-picket fence design allows for clear visibility, making it simple to monitor the area or accentuate the surrounding landscape while clearly defining the boundaries. Modern styles are minimalist, sometimes using horizontal slats to expand the property, and sometimes using luxurious woods like cedar or Ipe.

Maintenance & Weather Resistance

However, modern iron fences don’t rust. They’re processed to minimize maintenance requirements. There are a few techniques for doing this.

Galvanization: In this procedure, the metal is immersed in melted zinc. The zinc will protect the underlying metal from rusting.

Powder Coating: In this procedure, a powder is applied to the metal. The powder is usually a type of TGIC powder. The powder coating is stronger than a paint coating. It’s resistant to fading, chipping, and cracking.

Maintenance: It’s a good idea to periodically inspect the fence for scratches. Every now and then, you can wash the fence gently using a soap solution. If you notice rust specks on the fence, you can sand them off and apply rust-resistant paint.

Design Notes: Modern, minimalist fence styles often incorporate horizontal slats that make the area appear larger. They’re sometimes made from expensive woods like cedar or Ipe.
