Power washing and restaining a wood fence can extend its lifespan almost double. However, if not done properly, it can leave permanent marks on your fence. This may require you to use a solid opaque stain to cover it. When it comes to design, there are many styles to choose from. They range from traditional designs like spaced pickets or rustic split rail to modern designs like horizontal slats or fully private designs like shadowbox, board on board, or stockade. There are many designs like arched tops, scalloped edges, or vertical board and batten. The most common materials that are used for durability are cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated pine.

Phase 1: Powerwashing (The Prep)

Settings: For wood surfaces, keep the pressure between 500-1200 PSI. Applying too much pressure above 2000 PSI will gouge or “chew” the wood fibers.

Nozzle: A 25-degree (green) or 40-degree (white) fan tip is best. Avoid the 0-degree (red) tip because the laser beam will destroy the wood immediately.

Technique: Spray a wood-safe detergent like 30 Seconds Outdoor Cleaner or Wood Wizard. Allow the spray to dwell 5-20 minutes without drying. Keep the wand 12-24 inches away from the surface and wash with the grain using slow strokes. This will prevent cross-grain cut lines.

Phase 2: Drying Time

Standard Wait: Let it dry for a day or two before proceeding.

Testing for Dryness: To check for dryness, place a few water droplets on the surface. If they soak in easily, then you’re all set. If they bead up, then your wood is still too damp.

Moisture Content: A moisture content of 12 to 15 percent or less is desirable for staining.

Phase 3: Restaining

Oil-Based Stains: The best type of stain for an older fence is an oil-based type. It soaks into the wood to bind it together and prevent warping.

Ready Seal: Features its proprietary “Goof Proof” technology that prevents runs, laps, and streaks without back brushing.

Wood Defender: A professional-grade high-solids oil-based stain that wipes clean from most non-porous surfaces.

Water-based/solid stains: Ideal for new construction or covering up extensive scarring from previous power washing.

Behr Solid Color House & Fence Stain: Provides up to 10 years of protection with its covering of scars such as old paint.
